Devil Woman

The song Devil Woman was first recorded in 1976 by a UK singer named Cliff Richard.  It made it up to #9 on the UK charts.  It made it to number six in the United States.  Richard never again reached that level of success on the USA charts.  There's a lot to learn about the famous song.

Devil Woman

A man named Terry Britten penned it.  He was English singer-songwriter who wrote songs for people like Tina Turner, Olivia Newton John, and even Michael Jackson.  He also wrote well known songs for some hit movies including Mad Max Beyond Thunder Dome.  When Cliff performed Devil Woman Terry played guitar.  They recorded it at Abbey Road, a studio made famous by the Beatles.

The song tells a story.  A man believes he has been cursed by an evil cat.  The man seeks out a gypsy who he thinks can remove the curse.  But he's stunned when he learns that the curse didn't come from the cat.  It was the gypsy woman placed a curse on him to lure him into her clutches.

Songs like Devil Woman aren't very common.  They aren't complex.  They use few instruments for their simple tune.  Devil Woman is like this.  It was recorded with a guitar, some drums, an electric piano and miscellaneous percussion.  A singer was involved too.

For a pop song Devil Woman has unique combination of major and minor chords.  It's one of the earliest hit songs in the United States to encompass more than an octave of the musical range.

The song has had other performers.  One of these is the Accused.  The band was founded in 1981 in Washington.  Its style is what they called splatter rock.  They incorporate sounds from horror movies in their songs.  These include shrieking lyrics, and chainsaw like guitar riffs.

In 2005 Cradle of Faith covered Devil Woman.  This was an extreme metal band from England.  The band called its style any kind of metal.  The song was perfect for them.

Devil Woman is a haunting song.
